It doesn’t, and loving a home you are about to leave is not a contradiction, even though it can feel like one. So many women I work with across Cloverdale, Langley, South Surrey, and White Rock carry a quiet guilt about wanting to move on from a home that gave them so many good years. They assume that wanting something different means the years spent in that house did not count, when really it just means those years are complete and a new set is starting.

A home you loved for two decades holds an enormous amount. First steps, holidays, arguments that got resolved at that same kitchen table, quiet mornings that nobody else remembers but you. None of that disappears because you sell the house. The home was the setting for those years, not the thing that made them matter. I have written before about the emotional weight of selling a family home, and the pattern is always the same. Women delay a move they already know is right because leaving feels disloyal to the memories, as if staying is the only way to honour them.

But a home is not a container for memory in the way people sometimes treat it. The memories belong to you, not to the drywall and the driveway. You will not lose access to twenty good years by moving into a home that fits the next twenty better. What you gain is a place built around who you are now, not who you were when your kids were small or your life looked different than it does today. That is a different kind of gift to give yourself, and it does not cancel out anything that came before it.

This shows up differently depending on where you live. In Cloverdale and Langley, it often looks like a family home that has done its job well and is ready to pass that role to another family. In South Surrey and White Rock, it sometimes looks like letting go of a view or a street you have loved for the sake of something with less upkeep and more ease. However it shows up, most women end up asking themselves the same underlying question I hear across all four markets, whether to downsize, upsize, or stay put, and love for the old home rarely gives a clean answer either way.

One thing I remind clients often is that you’re not behind, you’re just in a different season, and that applies just as much to how you feel about the home you are leaving as it does to timing a sale or picking the right moment to list. There is no rule that says loving your old home and being ready for a new one have to cancel each other out. Both things are allowed to be true at the same time, and most women I work with eventually land there, usually with some relief once they stop fighting it.

If you find yourself stuck between love for a home and readiness for what is next, it is worth asking whether you are staying because the home still truly fits, or because leaving feels like it erases something. Those are two very different reasons to stay, and only one of them holds up once you look at it closely. Working through the Balance Method is a useful way to separate the two, because it starts with where you actually stand rather than with how attached you feel in any given week.

A practical habit I suggest to clients often is to take real photographs before you move, not just a quick phone snapshot for the listing. Walk through every room and photograph the small details that mattered to you, the mark on the doorframe where you measured your kids every year, the window seat where you drank coffee for a decade. Print a few of them. Keep them somewhere you will actually see them. That simple habit does more to protect the memory than staying in the house ever could, and it makes leaving feel less like erasing something and more like carrying it with you.
