What Happens If You Buy a Home and It Turns Out Not to Be Right? One Client’s Story

It really can happen, and it happened to Julie. Over about ten years, Julie moved through four different homes, and not because anything dramatic went wrong each time. Life simply kept shifting underneath her, and more than once, a home that looked right on paper turned out not to be right once she actually lived in it.

Julie started in a condo in White Rock, close to the water, living on her own in midlife after her life had reorganized itself in ways she had not planned for. After a while, she decided she wanted something with more space and a different feel, a townhouse in Clayton. We looked for about three months before she found one, and I remember that search clearly because it did not feel rushed, even though she was under some pressure at the time to make a decision. Kara Berman and I both had honest conversations with her along the way about what we were actually seeing in each home, not just what she wanted to hear.

Within about a year of moving into the Clayton townhouse, Julie knew it was not quite her. Nothing had gone wrong exactly. The space simply did not fit the way her life was actually unfolding, and she was honest enough with herself to notice that fairly quickly instead of staying somewhere that was not working just because moving again felt inconvenient. That is a harder thing to admit than people realize, that a decision you made carefully still was not the right one, and it takes a certain kind of self honesty to act on that instead of just living with it.

So she moved back to White Rock, closer to the water again, and stayed there for several years. Eventually her life shifted again, and about four years ago she moved into a one level rancher style townhouse in South Surrey, and that is the one that finally felt completely right. Kara handled that purchase and the one before it, and by that point, Julie did not need to explain her history or her preferences all over again, because the team already knew her file and the pattern of what had and had not worked for her over the years.

What strikes me most about Julie's story is not that she moved four times. It is that she never treated moving as a failure, even when a home did not work out the way she expected. Each move was simply more information about what she actually needed, part of figuring out what right sizing actually meant for her at that specific point in her life, not a mistake to feel bad about. That is a very different way of thinking about a move than the all or nothing pressure a lot of people put on themselves, as if there is one perfect home you are supposed to find immediately and get exactly right on the first try.

It also says something about why neighbourhood and floor plan are not quite the same decision. Julie's Clayton townhouse had plenty of space, but it was the fit of the neighbourhood and the daily rhythm of that specific home that never quite settled for her, which is really a question of whether it is a layout problem or a life problem, and part of why I always tell clients that neighbourhood matters more than the floor plan once you get into midlife decisions like this one. It also reflects something true about staying in touch after a sale closes. Because our team had worked with Julie more than once, her later purchases moved faster and with far less guesswork, simply because we already understood what mattered to her.

If you are in a home right now that does not quite feel right, even if you chose it carefully and for good reasons at the time, you are not the only one this has happened to, and it does not mean you made a mistake. It might just mean your life has moved on from a decision that made complete sense at the time. The first stage of the Balance Method is simply figuring out where you actually stand, whether this is your first home or your fourth. I am Bettina Reid with Balance Real Estate Group, and if that sounds familiar, I would be glad to talk through what might actually fit you now.
