How Do I Know If My Realtor Is Really Listening to Me? What That Looks Like in Cloverdale and Langley

A client told me once that she knew I was really listening when I pushed back on something she said she wanted. That surprised her a little, and it is actually the clearest answer I can give to the question of how you know if your Realtor is really listening to you. A Realtor who agrees with everything you say is not necessarily listening. One who asks a second question, or gently points out something you have not considered, usually is.

In Cloverdale and Langley, I meet a lot of women who have worked with an agent before and come away feeling like they were managed more than heard. They were told what to do, shown listings that fit a checklist instead of a life, and left to figure out the parts that did not quite fit on their own. Real listening looks different. It means asking why you are considering a move in the first place, not just where, and actually remembering the answer three conversations later.

One sign worth paying attention to is whether your Realtor asks about the parts of the decision that have nothing to do with square footage. Are you moving because the stairs are getting harder? Because the house feels too big now that the kids are gone? Because something about your life has shifted and the home has not caught up? How to know if it's time to start thinking about moving usually starts with questions like these, long before anyone talks about listings or pricing, and a Realtor who skips straight to the market numbers is usually skipping the part that matters most.

Listening also shows up in how someone responds when you are not sure yet. A lot of women come to me feeling stuck even when they have options, not because they lack information, but because they are carrying a decision nobody else in their life fully understands. A Realtor who is really listening does not rush that. They let the uncertainty sit for a conversation or two, because pushing someone toward a decision before they are ready almost always costs more later than it saves now.

The emotional side of this matters more than people expect going in. Selling a home, especially one you raised a family in, is not just a transaction, and the emotional weight of selling a family home is real even when the move itself is the right one. A Realtor who is truly listening will make space for that weight instead of rushing past it to get to the paperwork. That does not mean endless hand holding. It means being treated like a whole person with a whole life, not just a file that needs to close.

If you want a quick way to test this with any Realtor you are considering, pay attention to what they ask you in the first conversation. If almost every question is about the house, price range, timeline, square footage, that tells you one thing. If some of the questions are about you, why now, what you are hoping the next chapter actually looks like, that tells you something else entirely. The second kind of conversation is the one worth continuing.

I am Bettina Reid with Balance Real Estate Group, and the first conversation I have with anyone in Cloverdale or Langley is rarely about listings at all. If you are weighing a move and want to talk it through with someone who will actually ask the right questions, the Balance Method starts there, with no pressure and no assumptions about what you should already know.
