Why Perimenopause Can Make You Second-Guess a Move You Already Decided to Make

Yes, and it happens more often than most women expect. You make the decision. You feel settled about it for a week, sometimes two. Then one morning you wake up and the whole thing feels wrong again, even though nothing about your situation has actually changed.

This isn’t a sign that you made the wrong call. It’s what perimenopause does to the part of your brain that used to feel sure of things. The hormonal swings that come with this stage of life affect the same systems that handle mood, memory, and confidence. So a decision that felt solid on Tuesday can feel shaky by Thursday, not because the decision changed, but because you did, temporarily, for reasons that have nothing to do with real estate.

I see this constantly with women in Cloverdale who come to me ready to sell, spend a weekend picking out listing photos in their head, and then call me a few days later wondering if they’ve lost their minds. They haven’t. What’s actually happening is a wave of hormonal change moving through, and it’s landing right on top of one of the biggest decisions of their year. I wrote before about making housing decisions during perimenopause, and the second-guessing is really an extension of that same pattern. It’s not that the decision is bad. It’s that your nervous system is doing something separate from your judgment, and the two get tangled together.

The tricky part is that this kind of doubt feels exactly like real doubt. It shows up as a tight chest, a racing list of what-ifs at two in the morning, a sudden urge to call the whole thing off. Most women assume that feeling means something important, that their gut is trying to tell them the plan is wrong. Sometimes that’s true. But often, especially when the doubt arrives out of nowhere and passes just as quickly, it’s simply your body having a hard day. I’ve talked about how perimenopause brain fog affects your next real estate decision, and second-guessing is one of the clearest examples. When your brain feels foggy, it reaches for certainty wherever it can find it, and sometimes it finds false certainty in going backward.

So how do you tell the difference between a hormonal wave and a genuine change of heart? Give it a few days before you act on the feeling. If the doubt is still there after a week, sit with it and ask what specifically changed. If nothing concrete changed, and the feeling has already started to fade, that’s a strong clue it was passing weather rather than a real shift. This kind of doubt often echoes the same signals worth watching for when you’re still asking whether it’s time to start thinking about moving in the first place. Talk it through with someone who isn’t inside your head, whether that’s a partner, a close friend, or someone like me who has walked plenty of Cloverdale women through this exact wobble.

This is part of why I built the Balance Method around knowing where you stand before you do anything else. If you’ve already done that groundwork, a bad night or a foggy week doesn’t undo the decision, because the decision was never based on how you felt in that one moment. It was based on your actual life, your actual home, and your actual next chapter. You can revisit the Balance Method any time your footing feels unsteady, and it will remind you why you started this in the first place.

I think of one pattern I see almost every year with a Cloverdale client. She calls a few days after deciding to list, sure she has made a mistake, and by the end of the conversation nothing in her actual situation has changed. Her reasons for wanting less house are still true. Her plan still makes sense. What changed was a rough few nights of sleep and a wave of anxiety that had nothing to do with real estate at all. Once we separate the feeling from the facts, she feels steady again within a few days, and the sale moves forward exactly as planned.

If you’re in the middle of a decision and the doubt has crept in, you don’t have to sort it out alone. I’m Bettina Reid with Balance Real Estate Group, and I’ve spent almost twenty years helping Cloverdale women move through exactly this kind of moment. Reach out, and we’ll figure out together whether what you’re feeling is a real signal or just perimenopause having its say.
